In Chinese cultures, the word for ‘greens’ is 菜 (choy). Phonetically, it also sounds like the word for wealth (財). This is why many LNY dishes feature green vegetables such as lettuce (生菜, saang choy), which symbolizes “growing wealth”, and bok choy (白菜, bok choy), which represents “hundred fortunes”. The phrase 發財 (faat choy) translate to “getting rich”.
